About Us

The Litchfield School House is...

a preschool where students learn through play. We believe that a child’s first learning experience should be engaging, educational and fun. Children will learn through play their colors, shapes, letters, numbers, and beginning sight words. Each center, project and circle time is based upon the CTELDS (Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards). What does this mean? Each month, teachers focus in on three standards from the CTELDS. Teachers decide what standards will be implemented based on what students are learning and the needs of the students. For example, if students are learning songs for their Holiday Performance, one standard the teachers will focus on will be music. If the teachers notice students are struggling with letter identification, another standard to focus on will be language and literacy.

Students are observed throughout the day. The teachers teach throughout the day because one never knows when a learning moment may occur. However, specific projects and two circle times are used to teach letter recognition and monthly themes. A third circle time is used to reinforce a letter, color or theme we learned that day. Sometimes, a third circle is a fun book on CD that sparked a child’s interest. We love to know what interests each child and incorporate those interests with our learning. The Litchfield School House also provides a school readiness, literacy and yoga program. We offer several field trips throughout the school year, as well as in-house visitors. Our school day is from 9am-1pm. Students can enroll in a 2-day (Tu/Th), 3-day (MWF) or 5-day (M-F) program. Please check our Programs Page for more specific information on each program.

School Readiness Program
One program The Litchfield School House offers is a School Readiness Program. This program is offered to students kindergarten bound for the following school year. This program occurs during the Centers portion of our day on Monday and Thursday. Through the fun, rhyming stories of There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A...books, children will interact with The Old Lady and everything she swallows. Children will be able to identify the rhyming words from the story, as well as learn to write those words in their notebook. The purpose of the school readiness program is to understand rhyming words, identify words and write those words. Students who are not entering kindergarten will either enjoy extra outside time or a gross motor activity in our gross motor indoor area. We understand that some days we cannot evenly separate kindergarten bound students with returning preschool students. Sometimes, students not going into kindergarten will have the opportunity to enjoy There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A…activity. This will reinforce an understanding of how they can use their notebooks, as well as prepare them more for the following preschool year.

Featured Author Literacy Program

Every month, children will be introduced to a new author. Children will learn about that author and the different characters and books he or she writes about. Our first author will be James Dean, author of the Pete the Cat series. Pete the Cat will even be learning with us in our classroom! Be on the lookout for other characters to visit during their Featured Author month. Having a real version of the character children are reading about is a wonderful connection for them to make with reading.

Yoga Program

Aside from our literacy focus, The Litchfield School House also puts an emphasis on gross motor activities. We provide a yoga program, where a certified yoga instructor comes in twice a month to teach children about the benefits of yoga.

Classroom Pet

The Litchfield School House does not have a pet in our classroom. Instead, we collaborate with the animal rescue foundation, Little Guild, which allows us to sponsor one of their rescued animals. This animal will visit our classroom a few times throughout the school year and we will provide a donation drive for Little Guild, too. The Litchfield School House is very excited about this partnership and its hope in finding forever homes with deserving animals.
